National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) are premier vocational training institutions operated under the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. The primary objective of NSTIs is to impart instructor training for Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country, thereby strengthening the national vocational training ecosystem.

This institute was established in 1982 as the Model Industrial Training Institute (MITI) at Choudwar, Cuttack, within the campus of the Institute of Textile Technology, a Government of Odisha institution. In its formative years, the institute offered a range of foundational two-year trade programmes, including Electricity, Welding, Sheet Metal, Fitting, Turning, Milling, Grinding, Slotting, and Shaping, along with two six-month specialization modules in Fitting (General) and Metrology & Engineering Inspection.

In the academic year 2014–15, the institute was upgraded to an Advanced Training Institute (ATI). With this transition, the Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) was introduced in the Fitter trade with an intake capacity of 40. Subsequently, during 2018–19, CITS programmes in Electrician and Welder were added, each with an intake capacity of 20, further strengthening the institute’s instructor-training ecosystem.

In 2018–19, the institute was restructured and renamed as the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Bhubaneswar. Keeping pace with emerging industry needs, the institute introduced new-age skill programmes in Solar Technician (Electrical), Drone Technician under the CTS scheme and an Advanced Diploma in IT Networking and Cloud Computing. The institute has also been actively conducting short-term and master trainer development programmes.

In recognition of its robust infrastructure, academic excellence, and industry-aligned training delivery, National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Bhubaneswar. has been selected as a National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) by the Government of India under the PM-SETU Scheme, reaffirming its role as a leading institution for advanced skill development, instructor training, and future-ready workforce creation.
